Abstract
Nowadays, many English teachers have left “Pattern Practice” in increasing the student’speaking ability. The reason is that they are more interested applying “Communicative Approach”. Learning from the fact, the researcher is interested in conducting a research in order to know which approach is more effective. In relation to that, the researcher uses 80 students of the third semester student of Diploma III Finance and Banking Program, University of Merdeka Malang in academic year 1999/2000 as the sample of this research. After the two classes student are taught by using “communicative approach” and those from the other two classes are taught by giving “Pattern Practice” for one semester, then they are tested in order to know their speaking ability. The result is that the average score of the “Pattern Practice” classes is better than is “Communicative Approach” classes. Furthermore, after the data analysed by using not only T-Test but also Chi-Square Test they show that they are significant. It means that the English teaching that using “Pattern Practice” more effective than that using “Communicative Approach”.
