Abstract

This study examines the relationship between work stress and work-life balance in 351 working students in Malang City. The results showed a significant negative effect of job stress on the ability to balance work and study (p=0.000; β=-0.334). This finding reinforces the theory that job stress has the potential to interfere with the achievement of life balance. Further analysis revealed its importance. First, students with full-time jobs showed higher stress levels than part-time and freelance. Secondly, there was a significant difference based on length of employment, where respondents with >1 year of experience were better able to manage balance. Third, female students tend to be more vulnerable to work-life balance disorders than males. This study recommends three strategic approaches: (1) provision of campus-based stress management programs, (2) arrangement of flexible work schemes by companies, and (3) training of time management skills for students. The findings make an important contribution to the development of education and employment policies that are more responsive to the needs of student workers.
