Abstract
Consumptive behavior is an irrational decision to buy goods because it cannot distinguish between wants and needs. Consumptive behavior arises because of the sheer desire to buy products without being sourced from needs. One of the factors that cause individuals to experience consumptive behavior is parental social support. Parental social support is with the help given by parents to their children and makes children positive about themselves. Parental social support is to provide help and support to children in the form of appreciation, security, and assistance. Social support from parents is very influential in decision making, one of which is buying goods. This study aims to determine the relationship between parental social support on consumptive behavior in e-commerce shopping among the students at the Merdeka University of Malang. The total population in this study was 7532 students at the Merdeka University of Malang. The sample of this research is 380 using the purposive sampling technique. The measuring instrument used in this study is the scale of parental social support and the scale of consumptive behavior. The validity test in this study used the product moment and the reliability test with the Cronbach alpha formula. The validity test in this study used the product moment and the reliability test with the Cronbach alpha formula. Hypothesis testing was carried out using the product moment formula to produce a correlation coefficient of -0.697 with a p-value of 0.000 (p <0.05). The two variables have a strong correlation, and the form of the relationship is negative. This means that the higher the social support of parents, the lower the consumption behavior of students. Conversely, if the social support of parents is low, the consumption behavior of students is high.
