Abstract

Social interaction is a reciprocal relationship that exists between individuals, groups and individuals with groups. Many individuals are hypnotized by the presence of a smartphone so that it overrides the activities that are being carried out and has the possibility that someone is less involved in the conversation that occurs and makes the individual repeat the message he conveys. Phubbing is one of the factors that can destroy the process of social interaction. This study aims to determine the relationship between phubbing behavior and social interaction in students in Malang City. The research population was 251,902 students in Malang City. The sample in this study was 384 with accidental sampling technique. The measuring instrument used in this research is the social interaction scale and the phubbing behavior scale. The validity test uses the product moment formula and the reliability test uses the Cronbach alpha coefficient formula. Hypothesis testing is done by using the product moment formula which produces a correlation coefficient of -0.346 with a p value of 0.000, where the two variables have a negative relationship. This means that the higher the level of phubbing behavior in students, the lower the social interaction that occurs. On the other hand, if students have a low level of phubbing behavior, it will result in a large possibility of social interaction occurring.
