Abstract

Many teenagers today are dissatisfied with their body shapes as a result of accessing social media. Body dissatisfaction can be a source of suffering among adolescents, so factors that can alleviate this suffering are needed, one of which is self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship
between self-esteem and body dissatisfaction among adolescents who use social media. This research uses quantitative research methods. The instruments used in this study were a self-esteem scale and a body dissatisfaction scale, which were compiled by researchers using a Likert scale model. The number of subjects in this study was 350 young social media users in Malang City who were selected using
a purposive sampling method. The results of the hypothesis test using the Pearson product moment correlation obtained a correlation index of -0.799 with a significance value of 0.000 (p <0.05). So it can be concluded that there is a very significant negative relationship between self-esteem and body dissatisfaction in adolescents using social media. This means that the higher the self-esteem, the lower the body dissatisfaction. Conversely, the lower the self-esteem, the higher
the body dissatisfaction in adolescents.
