Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effect of the intensity of social media use on the tendency to become depressed in students. The research approach was designed with a descriptive quantitative approach with the hypothesis that there is an influence of the intensity of social media use on the tendency of depression in students. The population used in this research were all active students in Malang City. The sample used was 100 respondents. The measurement instrument in this study used a depression scale using the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI II) and a social media use intensity scale using four scale aspects consisting of attention, appreciation, duration and frequency. The data analysis method used is simple linear regression analysis. The results of simple linear regression analysis show that the intensity of social media use is
proven to influence the tendency to depression in students by 33.1%. The results of the F test obtained an Fcount value of 48.570 with a significance level of 0.000, this shows that there is a significant influence of the intensity of social media use on the tendency to be depressed in students. This means that with the
increasing intensity of social media use, the tendency for depression in studentswill also increase.
