Abstract

Geopolymer mortar is a mortar without using Portland cement as a base material, but using pozzolanic materials such as fly ash, silica fume, rice husk ash and other industrial materials that contain alumina (Al) and silica (Si). To reduce the quantity of cement production, geopolymer mortar is the right solution in reducing carbon dioxide in the air. Geopolymer mortar is not bonded with water but uses activators, namely sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to form polymerization bonds. The research aims to determine the effect of sodium hydroxide activator concentration and sodium silicate-sodium hydroxide activator ratio on the compressive strength of geopolymer mortar with silica fume as a cement substitute. In this study, the geopolymer mortar was in the form of 5 cm x 5 cm x 5 cm cubes of 27 pieces with sodium hydroxide activator concentrations of 8M, 10M, 12M and fine aggregate-binder ratios of 25%:75%, 40%60%, 60%:40.
Compressive strength testing was carried out at the age of 28 days using a Compressive Strength Of Hydraulic Cement Mortar tester based on ASTM C109 standard with a load capacity of 250 KN. The highest test result of compressive strength of geopolymer mortar was 15.17 Mpa with the use of 10M sodium hydroxide activator concentration at 40%:60% fine aggregate-binder ratio and the lowest test result of compressive strength of geopolymer mortar was 7.83 Mpa with the use of 12M sodium hydroxide activator concentration at 60%:40% fine aggregate-binder ratio.
