Abstract

This study discusses emotion regulation in early adult individuals who experience the impact of parental divorce. The early adulthood phase, which lasts between the ages of 18 to 25, is characterized by a transition towards independence and responsibility. Parental divorce can affect a child's emotional development, causing significant emotional and social problems. Through a phenomenological qualitative approach, this study explored the experiences of three respondents (TZ, LV, and AP) who experienced parental divorce in Malang City. The interview results showed that all respondents experienced difficulties in controlling emotions such as anger, confusion, and sadness. However, they managed to develop strategies to cope with emotions, such as seeking social support, adapting to new situations, and focusing on family happiness. The findings suggest that despite experiencing grief, early adult individuals can find positive meaning in divorce and strive to build a better life. This research is expected to provide insight for individuals experiencing divorce as well as parents in supporting their children.
