Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of social support on the tendency of depression in primigravida mothers who experience preterm birth. Preterm birth is a condition that can trigger psychological stress, especially for mothers who are giving birth for the first time. Social support is considered a protective factor that can help reduce the risk of depression during such uncertain situations. This research uses a quantitative approach with a survey method. The subjects consisted of 385 primigravida mothers who had experienced preterm birth, selected using purposive sampling. The instruments used were a social support scale based on Sarafino’s theory and the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II). Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression with SPSS version 25. The results showed a significant negative influence between social support and depression tendency (R² = 0.454, p < 0.05). This indicates that the higher the social support received, the lower the tendency for depression experienced by the mothers. Therefore, social support plays an important role in maintaining the mental health of primigravida mothers with preterm births.
