Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between social support and loneliness among out-of-Java migrant students at Universitas Merdeka Malang. The research background is grounded in the high social, emotional, and cultural adaptation challenges faced by migrant students, which often lead to loneliness. A quantitative correlational approach was employed, using simple linear regression analysis. The sample consisted of 300 students from the 2021 cohort, selected through a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using the UCLA Loneliness Scale to measure loneliness and the Social Support Questionnaire to measure social support. The results indicated a significant negative relationship between social support and loneliness (B = -0.416, β = -0.724, p < 0.01), with social support contributing 52.4% to the variance in loneliness (R² = 0.524). These findings confirm that higher levels of social support are associated with lower levels of loneliness among migrant students. The study provides important implications for universities to strengthen social support programs as a strategy to reduce loneliness among migrant students.
