Abstract

The phenomenon of single-parent families, especially single mothers, is becoming increasingly common in modern society. Consequently, various psychological dynamics emerge that influence child development, one of which is subjective wellbeing. This study aims to describe subjective well-being in children raised by single mothers, which includes positive affective, negative affective, and cognitive aspects. This study uses a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method and involves three early adult subjects (aged 19–24 years) who have been raised by single mothers since childhood. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results of the study showed that although the three subjects experienced the absence of a father figure, they were still able to develop relatively positive subjective well-being, supported by a strong relationship with their mother, life experiences that shape independence, and the ability to interpret life constructively. This study shows that single mother parenting can still produce psychological well-being if accompanied by emotional support, positive meaning, and resilience experiences.
