Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of academic stress on the intention to smoke among students in the city of Malang. The research method used is a quantitative correlational approach with a total of 400 respondents. The sampling determination uses an purposive sampling approach. The measurement tools used are the academic stress scale (α=0.748) and the smoking intention scale (α=0.715). The data analysis technique uses simple linear regression. The results of the data analysis show a regression coefficient of 0,000 < 0,05, indicating that the relationship between academic stress and smoking intention is positive. This means that the higher the level of academic stress felt by students, the greater their tendency to have the intention to smoke. This research can provide information that the higher the level of academic stress experienced, the higher the intention of students to smoke. Therefore, good management of academic stress can be one of the efforts to reduce the tendency to smoke among students.
