Abstract

Having a high level of body image satisfaction can make an individual feel confident and comfortable in a social environment. The existence of social assumptions about the ideal body standard makes an individual feel the need to change his body shape. The impact of a negative body image will make a person feel unwelcome in an environment that requires an individual to have an ideal body standard. Negative body image is associated with several factors including body shaming, where body shaming is a criticizing, demeaning behavior that leads to a person's physique. The research population was 439 female students in one of the Psychology Faculties of a Private University in Malang City. The sample is 87 with purposive sampling technique. The measuring instrument used in this research is the body image scale with 25 items and the body shaming scale with 27 items. The validity test uses the F test formula and the reliability test uses the alpha coefficient formula. The hypothesis test was carried out using the F test formula which resulted in a significance value of 0.000. It means that there is a significant influence between the body image scale and the body shaming scale. It is interpreted that body shaming treatment can make the satisfaction level of student body image negative.
