Abstract

Cultural shock is often experienced by individuals who move to a new place and live there for a long period of time. If cultural shock is not addressed immediately, it will have negative impacts on individuals. Cultural shock is often experienced by students who study outside their hometown and it can disturb their learning process. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between self-disclosure and cultural shock among students participating in exchange programs. This research is a nonexperimental quantitative study. The sample for this study consisted of 40 students who participated in student exchange programs at the Universitas Merdeka Malang. The sampling technique used was a saturated sampling technique with a measurement tool of self-disclosure scale (41 valid) and cultural shock scale (38 valid) in the form of a Likert scale. The reliability coefficient was 0.916 for the self-disclosure variable and 0.796 for the cultural shock variable. The hypothesis test using the Pearson correlation test obtained a value of 0.102 > 0.05, which means that there is no relationship between selfdisclosure and cultural shock among students participating in exchange programs.
