Abstract

Suicidal ideation among female college students has become an alarming phenomenon closely related to individual emotion regulation abilities. This study aims to understand the dynamics of emotion regulation in female students experiencing suicidal ideation. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was employed to explore the subjective experiences of three female students aged 18–25, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The findings reveal that the dynamics of emotion regulation include patterns of self-blame, cognitive-emotional conflict, a strong urge to relieve negative emotions, a personal search for coping strategies, difficulty in emotional awareness, a tendency to suppress emotional expression, and negative self -perception. Social support and the exploration of appropriate strategies play an essential role in facilitating the emotion regulation process. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the internal processes experienced by female students with suicidal ideation and emphasizes the importance of intervention approaches that focus on improving emotion regulation skills and responsive social support.
