Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between the intensity of social media usage and social interaction among psychology students at Universitas Merdeka Malang. The background of this research is based on the growing trend of social media usage among students, which is suspected to reduce the quality of face-toface social interactions. This research employed a quantitative correlational method using simple regression analysis. The sample consisted of 112 students selected through incidental sampling. The instruments used in the study were tested for validity and reliability, resulting in Cronbach’s Alpha values of 0.970 for social media usage intensity and 0.971 for social interaction—indicating very high reliability. The analysis revealed a negative correlation coefficient of -0.639 with a significance value of p = 0.000 (p < 0.05), suggesting a significant negative relationship between social media usage intensity and social interaction. In other words, the higher the intensity of students’ social media use, the lower their tendency to engage in direct social interactions. The coefficient of determination (R²) was 0.364, indicating that 36.4% of the variation in social interaction can be explained by social media usage intensity. These findings highlight the importance of students being mindful of their social media usage to maintain the quality of reallife social interaction within academic and social environments.
