Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between academic stress and smoking behavior among university students who are currently writing their thesis in Malang City. This study used a quantitative research design with a correlational approach, involving 385 student respondents. The sample was selected using nonprobability sampling techniques, specifically incidental and snowball sampling. The instruments used in this study were the academic stress scale (α = 0.935) and the smoking behavior scale (α = 0.945). Data analysis was conducted using simple linear regression. The results showed a regression coefficient value of p = 0.001 < 0.05 with an R² value of 0.579. Based on these results, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between academic stress and smoking behavior among thesis-writing university students in Malang City. Academic stress contributes 57.9% to smoking behavior, while the remaining percentage is influenced by other factors. The implication of this research highlights the importance of managing academic stress adaptively so that students do not rely on smoking as a coping mechanism, whether through individual coping strategies or support from the university environment.
