Abstract

The increasing development of social media has led to the emergence of social comparison behavior, which has the potential to induce fear of missing out, particularly among young adults. This study aims to investigate the influence of social comparison, both upward and downward, on the tendency for fear of missing out among social media users aged 18-25 years. This research employs a quantitative approach with a total of 208 respondents. The measurement tools used are the fear of missing out scale adapted by Kurniawan and Hardianti (2022), and the social comparison scale adapted by Damayanti (2022). Data analysis was conducted using Linear Regression test. The results indicate that upward social comparison has a significant positive influence on fear of missing out, while downward social comparison has a significant negative influence on fear of missing out. This study contributes to the understanding that social comparison, particularly upward comparison, is an important mechanism in the emergence of fear of missing out and is relevant for further investigation in different contexts.
