Abstract
Political participation is very important in its position as one of the benchmarks fordemocracy in a country. Changes in lifestyle and advances in communication andinformation technology among young people also have an impact on their level ofpolitical participation. The opening of wider public space and opportunities for thedissemination of information and wide-reaching interaction processes is one of theopportunities that social media can offer. It is hoped that political participation amongyoung people will be able to encourage the formation of a better democracy, especially in democratic events such as elections, where this activity determines thefate of the country for years to come. This research uses a type of quantitativeresearch with a descriptive approach carried out at the Independent University of Malang, more precisely with Public Administration study program students as thepopulation from which samples were then taken. The aim of this research is to explainthe influence that the use of social media has on the political participation of 100novice voters who are Public Administration students. The questionnaire created via Google Form was used to support the research and then also used by Ms. Excel tocompile incoming data from respondents. This data was then processed using SPSS version 22 software. The research was also supported by secondary data obtainedthrough books and previous research in the form of journals and theses as referencesources. The results obtained after carrying out Simple Linear Regression Analysiswere that it was found that there was an influence caused by the use of social mediaby first-time voters which had an impact on their political participation. In thisresearch, the influence found is significant and has a positive direction, which showsthat the use of social media has a positive effect in encouraging the politicalparticipation of novice voters who are Public Administration students at MerdekaUniversity, Malang. It can be said that the political participation of first-time votersin the 2024 elections is influenced by the existence of social media and all theinformation contained in it, where this also influences the perspective and tendencyto support new voters towards their chosen candidate pair. However, it is hoped thatthere will be follow-up action by the government regarding hoax news circulating onsocial media which can more or less reduce the comfort and safety of using socialmedia regarding the political participation of first-time voters.
