Abstract

Geopolymer mortar is a mortar without using Portland cement as a base material, but using pozzolanic materials such as fly ash, silica fume, rice husk ash and other binders that contain alumina (Al) and silica (Si). To reduce the amount of cement production, geopolymer mortar is a good solution to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. Geopolymer mortars do not bond to water but use sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as activators to create polymer bonds. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sodium hydroxide activator concentration and the ratio of sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide activator on the compressive strength of geopolymer mortar that uses fly ash as a cement substitute.
In this study, 27 geopolymer mortar cubes of 5 cm x 5 cm x 5 cm were made with two variables, namely the concentration of sodium hydroxide activator used, namely 6M, 8M, 10M and the sodium silicate-sodium hydroxide ratio of 1:2, 1:1 and 2:1. Compressive strength testing was carried out at the age of 28 days using the Compressive Strenght of Hydraulic Cement Mortar test equipment. The test is based on ASTM C109 on Standard Test Method for Comprehensive Strength of Hydraulic Cement Mortars.
The highest result of testing the compressive strength of geopolymer mortar was obtained at 55.00 Mpa with the use of 10M sodium hydroxide activator concentration at a sodium silicate-sodium hydroxide ratio of 1:1 and the lowest result of testing the compressive strength of geopolymer mortar was obtained at 31.83 Mpa with the use of 6M sodium hydroxide activator concentration at a sodium silicate-sodium hydroxide ratio of 2:1.
