Abstract

Geopolymer mortar is a mortar without using Portland cement as a base material, but using pozzolanic materials such as fly ash, silica fume, rice husk ash and other industrial materials that contain alumina (Al) and silica (Si). Geopolymer mortar is not bonded with water but uses activators, namely sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to form polymerization bonds. To reduce the quantity of cement production, geopolymer mortar is the right solution in reducing carbon dioxide in the air. The research aims to determine the effect of sodium hydroxide activator concentration and sodium silicate-sodium hydroxide activator ratio on the compressive strength of geopolymer mortar with silica fume as a substitute for cement.
In the study, 27 geopolymer mortar cubes of 5 cm x 5 cm x 5 cm were made with varying concentrations of sodium hydroxide activator, namely 8M, 10M, 12M and sodium silicate-sodium hydroxide ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1. Compressive strength testing was carried out at the age of 28 days using the Compressive Strenght of Hydraulic Cement Mortar test equipment. Tests based on ASTM C109 on Standard Test Method for Comprehensive Strength of Hydraulic Cement Mortars.
The highest result of compressive strength testing of geopolymer mortar was obtained at 15.17 Mpa with the use of 10M sodium hydroxide activator concentration at a sodium silicate-sodium hydroxide ratio of 2:1 and the lowest result of compressive strength testing of geopolymer mortar was obtained at 8.67 Mpa with the use of 12M sodium hydroxide activator concentration at a sodium silicate-sodium hydroxide ratio of 3:1.
