Abstract

The freshman year of college adjustment is usually acknowledged as important task that determine academic success and continuity of study in the next following years (Eileen & Mattingly, 2006; Lubker & Etzel, 2007). Many researches were done to investigate the factors which can predict first year college studentsÂ’ academic adjustment. This research examined the contribution of personal and environmental factor in first year college studentsÂ’ academic adjustment. The contribution of self concept as a personal factor and social support as environmental factor had investigated in this research. This research was conducted on 125 first year student of University of Indonesia from many faculties. The result proved that self concept and social support have significant contribution in first year college studentsÂ’ academic adjustment. Beside that, self concept as a personal factor was proved giving bigger contribution to academic adjustment than social support as environmental factor. Both results support the research hypotheses. Additional result of this research found that the each of self concept dimensions, which are academic self concept, social self concept, emotional self concept, and physical self concept has significant correlation to academic adjustment.
