Abstract

Interest in reading poetry shows its decay from time to time. The problem that appears is seemingly caused by the difficulty to uderstand the use of language of poetry. In Indonesia, the theaching of English is mostly emphasized on the teaching of grammar and structure, and the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The teaching of English in primary and secondary schools even at colleges and universities do not touch the teaching of literature including poetry. At the English Departments, unfortunately, also shows this tendency. This article tries to elucidate the problem and carefully tries to show the concept, the selection, the technique, and the notion in the teaching of poetry in EFL classes.
