This study focuses on an analysis of materialism represented trough characterisation of the main characters in vanity fair. In so doing, firstly the discussion tries to explore social backgrounds and characteristics of Victorian period when the novel was created. Secondly, the discussion attempts to scrutinise characterisation of the four characters that presumably demonstrates Victorian materialism perspectives. Thirdly, the analysis deals with an effort to find out the relationship between the Vanity Fair and the atmosphere of the Victorian's time by exploring the four character's physical apperience, thoughts, dialogues, and actions. This study applies a sociocultural approach is main strategy of scrutiny. The analysis shows that society in the novel represent the social condition influenced by the ideas of Victorian materialism. In addition, the examination proves that thackeray demonstrates the criticism of negative social phenomena of Victorian period such as snobberies, an exhibition of superiority and fortune, the idea of luxurious life-style, and greediness in pursuing treasures. In short, vanity fair is considered as a novel that covers satirical of the English social structure at the time.
