The theories of literature discussed in this article are those developed in the twentieth century. Each of the theories contributes a certain point of view on literature and the study of literature. The first theory to be discussed is formalism that holds and idea that literariness depends on the device used by writers in their works regardless of social, historical, and psychological aspects of literary creation. The second theory is structuralism that stresses the idea that literariness is the result of the interrelationships between all elements within an literary work. The third theory is marxism that emphasizes the mimetic aspects of literature. The fourth theory is Receptional Aesthetics that views literature as transactional dialogue between a literary text and its readers. A special discussion is given on the semiotic Approach on literature and its prospect.
