Abstract

This paper is aimed at demonstrating that the oral literature tradition especially in East Java can be used for a historical reconstruction. This paper is based on the current trend in history since 1960s that many efforts have been done for studying the oral history of South East Asia. This trend assumes that oral history may reveal the color and the feeling of human experience in the past through the oral expression of the witnesses. However this paper shows that the reconstruction of history may be done although there is no witness at all, namely through oral literature which is here defined including folk loves and mythical stories. This is done due to the charateristics of oral and written literature in Java which is usually considered to be historical literature meaning that the text is intended for commemorating the history, usually of the kings and important events in the kingdom.
