Discourse analysis has been a prospective progress of the study that tries to deal with human communication named discourse. From the begining, it has been modeled from lingiustics. Consequently, it tends to ignore certain characteristics of texts that cannot be coped by using linguistic model. In fact, there is a type of such a discourse that has distinctive characteristics that demand a different model of discourse approach, namely literary discourse. This paper is aimed at extramining critically some of the main tenets of discourse analysis and to assess their potential role in the analysis of literature. Initialy, the kind of discourse analysis examined is that which derives from and shares some of the scientific premises of linguistics. It is intended to show these approaches cannot always cope with literary discourse and must lead to a search for some different relation between text and knowledge from that which is currently accepted.
