Sudjianto, Sulih (2001) Teaching literature as unique discourse. Journal of Language and Literature Poetica, 1 (1).

This paper primarily based on the assumption that literature is a unique discourse due to some reasons. First, in terms of language, literary language is not as referential as the scientific or daily language. Following Jacobson (1960) it also stresses the paradigmatic (selection) aspect rather than syntagmatic (combination). Second, the world offered in literature is the "secondary model" of the world and the truth in literature is the third type of the truth. Third, there are cultural, spatial and temporal distances between the reader and the writer of literature. Fourth, in literature there exist two overlapping systems of codes, namely linguistic code and literary code. Fifth, literary convention is not as strict as the language convention thus individual distinction cannot be avoided. Due to the distinctive characteristics of literature above, literary teaching must undoubtedly be treated in a different way than the conventional method applied these days.
