Many people believe that the success of second language acquisition is influenced by critical period. A learner is said to successfully acquire the second language when s/he is in a certain age in which the critical period is not passed yet. Most of researchers in second language acquisition agree that once the critical period passes, a learner cannot acquire the second language successfully anymore. Is it true that critical period is the only factor which influence the success or the failure of the second language acquisition? Is true that adult learners whose critical period has passed cannot acquire second language successfully? This article presents the current opinions on the existence of critical period and its impact toward the achievement of non-native speakers in acquiring second/foreign language. Besides, it also presents information about other factors which influence second language acquisition. The scope of this article is on the discussion of the trade-off of the existence of critical period among psycholinguists and its influence to the success of second language acquisition especially on the contradiction of young and adult learners.
