Abstract

The continuously evolving work environment can increase workload demands, potentially disrupting employees' mental well-being and performance effectiveness. This study aims to analyze the relationship between workload and employees’ mental health, with burnout as a mediating variable. An explanatory quantitative method was employed involving 278 full-time permanent employees in Malang City, selected through accidental sampling. The measurement tools used were the Role Overload Scale (α=0.710), the Maslach-Trisni Burnout Inventory (α=0.866), and the Mental Health Continuum-Short Form (α=0.912). Data were analyzed using mediation regression with PROCESS Macro Model 4. The findings revealed that workload was significantly associated with burnout (B=1.07), and burnout was significantly related to mental health (B=-0.28). Workload also had a significant direct negative relationship with mental health (B=-0.32). The indirect effect of workload on mental health through burnout was also significant (Effect=-0.30). Therefore, burnout partially mediates the relationship between workload and mental health. This study supports the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory and suggests that organizations implement stress management policies and provide psychological support to enhance employee wellbeing.
