Abstract
Geopolymer mortar is a mortar that does not use Portland cement as a base material, but uses pozzolanic materials in the form of fly ash, silica fume, rice husk ash and other industrial materials which contain lots of alumina (Al) and silica (Si). To reduce the quantity of cement production, geopolymer mortar is the right solution to reduce carbon dioxide in the air. Geopolymer mortar is not bound with water but uses activators, namely sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to form polymerization bonds. The research aims to determine the effect of sodium hydroxide activator concentration and fly ash-activator ratio on the compressive strength of geopolymer mortar with fly ash as a cement substitute. The aim of this research is to produce the compressive strength of geopolymer mortar made from fly ash with 27 cube-shaped test objects of 5 cm x 5 cm x 5 cm with varying sodium hydroxide activator concentrations, namely 6M, 8M, 10M and a fly ash-activator ratio of 50 % : 50%, 60% : 40%, 70% : 30%. Compressive strength testing was carried out at 28 days of age using a Compressing Testing Machine (CTM) test equipment based on ASTM C109 concerning the Standard Test Method for Comprehensive Strength of Hydraulic Cement Mortars. The results showed that the highest compressive strength of geopolymer mortar was found in the fly ash-activator ratio of 70%: 30% of 48.17 MPa with the use of 8M sodium hydroxide activator concentration while the lowest average compressive strength was in the fly ash-activator ratio of 50%: 50% of 14.00 Mpa with a sodium hydroxide activator concentration of 10M.
